How to Measure Your Wall

Learn how to measure width and height for a custom wallpaper mural at CMW. Includes doors, windows, slopes, and trim allowance tips.

Measuring your wall is simple. Enter the exact width and height of the surface you want to cover. We print your mural to those dimensions so it fits cleanly from edge to edge.

What we need: wall width and wall height only. Do not include skirting boards, baseboards, or cornices in your numbers. Add about 4 inches (10 cm) to both width and height when ordering so you have trim allowance during installation.

1. Standard rectangular walls

Measure the full width and the full height of the wall surface. Double-check both numbers before checkout. We only need the area you want covered—not moldings or trim that will stay in place.

  • Measure width at the widest usable point.
  • Measure height from the top of the skirting/baseboard to the ceiling (or to the bottom of any cornice you will keep).
  • Write measurements in centimeters or inches—our wall tool accepts both.

2. Walls with doors, windows, or radiators

Still measure the wall’s overall width and overall height. Do not subtract the door or window. Obstructions are trimmed out on-site after the mural is hung as a full rectangle.

If you want the design positioned carefully around an opening, send us a rough sketch or photo after ordering. We can note the obstruction on your proof so important motifs stay clear of the cut-out.

3. Sloped ceilings and attic walls

Measure the longest width and the tallest height of the wall. Ignore the slope when calculating size. We print a full rectangle; the angled edge is trimmed during installation.

4. Walls with two slopes or complex angles

Find the longest and tallest spans and use those as your width and height. Your mural ships as a square or rectangle. Cutaways for angles happen when you hang it.

5. Covering more than one wall

Add the widths of every wall you want in one continuous mural, then enter that total width with a single height. You do not need separate orders for each wall if the design should wrap as one scene.

Quick checklist

  1. Clear furniture so you can reach the full wall.
  2. Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
  3. Measure twice—especially height near corners.
  4. Add +4 inches / 10 cm to width and height for trim.
  5. Enter dimensions in Customize & Buy, then preview the crop.
